--------------------------------------------------------------- I'm curious, Patrick, what 'about year of birth' are you using for a basis of age for William Deatherage. We know he witnessed the Cavenaugh bit in 1734 and then the land grant after that, but I'm not sure I've seen anything to indicate his age/birth. --------------------------------------------------------------- I figure that if Wm was old enough to witness in 1734 then he had to be at least 18? (but probably older)...he was witnessing a deed of gift, then was he simply on jury duty that day so to speak or is it probable that he was a friend of Cavenaugh (doing this from memory, correct spellings/facts) and if a friend, was he a friend of the father giving the gift or the friend of the kid getting the gift...sounds silly I know but I figure he would be older if friend of the father and younger if friend of the kids...so would anytime between 1706 and 1716 cover it safely? So...I guess in either case, he was either 26 or 36 when Achilles was born...not unreasonable...don't know why I have had a mental block on it and it's bothered me all this time...it's pretty much been proven that Robert-George-Philemon-John were brothers, yes? But has the tie ever really been made to Achilles? (again, I'm doing this on one cup of coffee and no books in front of me and old age really effecting my memory so if I go off the page, just ignore me) --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Spottsylvania was created 1721 from western frontiers of King and Queen, Essex and King William counties. Caroline was formed from Essex, King and Queen and King William in 1728. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- (Rhonda - btw did you ever see the reference to "Deridge" getting 60 acres in 1673? http://www.geocities.com/heartland/7013/dgs/frame1.html) ---thinking out loud rattle mode on--- Ok, where did Wm come from and when. One option is that he showed up in 1734/5 from whereever with a big group of people cuz they were going to get some land...option being is simply that he doesn't have a history here. He gets his land (we must note that he did have'em spell the name right!), hooks up with this Susan Eastham gal (it may or may not have been her first)(where did we get her name first or last anyway?)(if the Eastham's were so important then why don't we know more (meaning names of kids etc) about them?) and the rest is history... Another option is that he was here for awhile - with or without a group of other friends (knowing us current day Deatherage's, probably without)(no, I take that back, we're closer to our friends that our family)...He was either a family friend of the Cavenaughs, Easthams, Birds etc and either him or his dad moved from county to county with them... If the Easthams were above middle class so to speak, they wouldn't necessarially let their daughter hang around just anyone...the Deatherage fellow surely was someone well thought of...and if the Easthams were military, perhaps the dashing young Deatherage was indeed an up and coming junior officer... Now Eastham is without question English. Agreed. Sounds to me that this Deatherage character was a charismatic mixed breed (rumour has it the father was French, the mother a hot-blooded Spaniard), the fearless one who they say mysteriously appeared one day in from the wilderness. His European education was only partially cloaked and enhanced his knowing of the ways of the Indian. In turn, could see what they could not - the white man was here to stay. But with one glance of the beautiful Susanna, his total alligence was to but one world... Now if the Eastham's were in Flint Hill and Deatherage's land was outside of Jefferston...were Wm and Susan together before or after the land grant? Or does it make a diff? If before then they came with the Eastham family, if after then he would have been living in the city at some point... And then there's Clifton...how much do we believe...if in fact it was a Deatherage/Eastham place then and the Jefferston property was some distance away...was Clifton originally Eastham property...is this where they went in '47 or so? (acutally that could make sense if in fact this is where they and Robert are buried) When they opened up a new county, they would also create a new parish(s)? So would I move because... it's to crowded... there's new land for the taking... this Parish and it's politics are really getting on my nerves... this County and it's politics are really getting on my nerves... all of the above... ok...it's early 1700's and I'm in America out on the edge of the sticks with a group of people I know doing my thing. What is my thing? Am I growning tobacco? Am I learning how to grow tobacco? Am I an ex-Indian/French fighter who got land for service? Am I an ex-Indian/French fighter who now works for someone who got land for service? Am I wanna-be real-estate agent and am going to buy and sell land? 1734 Jefferston, 1742 Achilles born, 1746 land stuff - the D's are pretty much settled in on the south side of Flint Hill...the counties simply changing around them... Culpepper starting up in 1749ish...wonder if politics chased us off to North Carolina... ...had forgotten about the '63/64 court thing...at the time, just figured it was probably one of the grandsons and would think on it later... ...why didn't William name one of his sons William? ---thinking out loud rattle mode off--- this is fun, don't stop now... patrick.
