Patrick and Bonnie,
Here is part of a letter from 227 Sutton Place, Lexington, Ky
May 11, 1972.
------You'll find Martin Deatherage under Lewis on page 2. Martin lied about his
age and enlisted in the Union army at age 16. His being withe the Union forces
was not pleasing to all of his family, and little mention of them was even made by
him.
William Thomas Detherage dropped the "a" and it is recorded in Somerset Ky court
House, no other family, goes by this spelling- Because
of army records of E.C.(my husband)we must retain it.

The Madison county Deatherages were aristocratic, wealthy and confederate.
Many colored families by the name of Deatherage are descendants of freed slaves
in that area-They took the name of their owner.

Note: If anyone is intrested I will try to find the rest of this letter.
This seems to be the source of one family dropping the "a" out of Deatherage.
Regards,
Cousin Gene.
