DEATH=CRANE connection in Dartford
I have never really understood why it is suggested sometimes that one of William Death[I]'s wives had the surname Crane. I have seen it suggested that he married Elizabeth Crane, or Anne Crane or Alice Crane but without any indication of an original source for this information.
Here is the best I can come up with for a Death=Crane connection.
William Death[I] married (as his first wife) Elizabeth Vaughan (dau. ofWilliam Vaughan). Amongtheir many children was Thomas Death[II], born probably before 1565.
Thomas Death[II] married as his first wife Johane Hed (dau. of John Hed or Head). From this marriage came the family that subsequently lived at North Cray and Knowlton.
Thomas Death[II] married as his second wife Magdalen(whose maiden name is said to have been Stokes). I am only aware of one child of this second marriage, Alice Death[III], her baptism is recorded in the Dartford parish registers on the 2nd of October 1605:-
"Alyce d of Thomas Death gent and Magdalen his wief"
The Visitation of Kent, 1663-8 is published in Harleian Society Vol LIV (1906). One of the families included was the Crane family, the submitter of information about this family was John Crane (son of Thomas Crane of Cadbury, Somerset and Katherine Attwood of Wells). Although these heralds visitations often include wishful thinking about distant ancestors, it seems reasonable to suppose that details obtained from John Crane abouthis own wives would be accurate. He gives his second wife as Elizabeth d. of Edward Boys, his third wife as Martha d. of William Coppin and his fourth wife as Frances Best d. of John Best. His first wife; mother of his children Thomas, John, Francis and Ann; was "Alice d. of Thomas Death of Dartford". This can only be Alice Death[III] daughter of Thomas Death[II]. I would guess their marriage took place in the 1620s with Alice's deathat least four years later.
This Crane connection is of course two generations later than William Death[I], in the same place but thirty years or more after his death. I have however seen references to William Death[I] that in error place him in the early seventeenth century.
Ian.
