Charles Dearman (b 1800) was a cricket player for Sheffield, Yorkshire, England back in the early 1800s. Should anyone be looking for this particular branch of the Dearman family, I can help, (and use some help.) This particular Dearman member emmigratated from Yorkshire sometime after 1832, and probably before 1855. Around 1955, I interviewed his grandson, William Taylor (Ted) Smith in Baltimore Maryland, USA. It seems that Charles Dearman changed his name to Smith. The family oral history is that Charles was coerced by an aunt to change his name from Dearman to Smith in order to receive an inheritance or a bequest. Charles Smith had one son that I know of, Walter Bagshaw Smith, who was the father of Ted and four older sisters. Reading between the lines, I would not be surprised to learn that Charles may have had more personal and possibly legal reasons to leave Yorkshire and come to America, but that's pure speculation. If anyone has mor einformation, please let me know. I'd love to have a fuller story. By the way, there was a Dearman exploring the South Pole area with American Admiral Richard E Byrd. Ted, at the age of 62, was a part of Operation Deepfreeze I, in 1955. True, the name wasn't Dearman, but it was Dearman blood.
