Hi all -- I'm trying to track down the veracity of a family tradition that connects my 5g-grandmother, Elizabeth Dearman, to Queen Anne of England. As near as I can make out at this point, Elizabether Dearman was b. abt. 1731 in Nottinghamshire, England. In 1761 she married a sea captain named Robert Williams, also from Nottinghamshire. Together they emigrated to New Bern, North Carolina, where Elizabeth died in 1771. According to family tradition, Elizabeth was of aristocratic birth and a lady-in-waiting to Queen Anne (although I don't know whether this is supposed to be Anne Stuart or Anne II, wife of King William IV). Records of the Dillingham and Williams Families, written in the 19th c. by Elizabeth's great-grandson Charles H. Lloyd, embellishes the story even farther, claiming that Elizabeth Dearman and Queen Anne were "first cousins." This seems unlikely to me, given how far apart their birth years are, but I'm wondering whether anyone else here has ties to this Dearman line and might be able to help me sort this out. Thanks in advance! Notify Administrator about this message?
