We seem to have met at the event in time. I had just come across this in search of my bloodline back through Virginia
----------------------------------------------

Hi April,

I have the paper, it's a little hard to read but it goes something like this:

June 2, 1904
James J Woodruff

Mary Morris mother of Anne Morris slave of Dearing and Gordons.
Dearing on the road to Elon had join Valentine (Vol) Rucker, (Nathan Rucker & David Rucker were good natured).

Dearing and Rucker had argument about a line fence Vol Rucker killed Dearing. Vol afraid of Dearing, Dearing shot at Rucker first, Rucker on horse, Dearing hid behind rush with colt and shot first____?

"My conceince suffers" Vol killed Dearing. Carried Dearing ___? on past ___? Salt Creek, died after a few days.

Miss Jane Dearing after Rucker with a Winchester and saddle___?
rode around fields

Terey? stables at ___? 15cent horse pd. me? Dearing waited for Vol Rucker to return from Lynchburg.

That was the end of it, but the Dearing she spoke of was William Dearing, who was in fact a neighbor of Vol Rucker. You can find them on the 1860 census, but this must have happened after 1860 because William is not with his wife Jane on the 1870 census.

Also James Woodruff is my gr gr Uncle he was married to Anne Morris 12/22/1875 she died about 10 years later and he remarried to a Rosa Penn a neighbors daughter.

Vickie

This is a transcript of a handwritten note from a slave present at the exchange. Can you tell me more of this feud?
