Are the Dearings/Deerings Irish?

I am having such a hard time answering my families questions on nationality. I know the Dearing name was traced back to it's first of hearing of the name in Galway, Ire.
Does anyone have a different nationality for the Dearings?
I am a descendant of Robert Deering born 1700/1703 in VA.
