Dear Nick,

I am replying to your message posted on 9 June 2004 in which you ask for any information about the Deans family of Aberdeenshire in Scotland. Regrettably, Myrna is not correct in what she has said about the Dunedin Deanses. I myself am a direct descendant of the Deans family of Aberdeenshire, the following being some of my forebears:

I am the great-great-great-granddaughter of William Deans (dates unknown), who married Margaret Bain. Sorry, no further information as yet.

My great-great-grandfather was Francis Deans (b. 1813, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, d. 1854, Ballater, Aberdeenshire), who married Catherine Riddell (b. 11 July 1816 [1810?], died 12 February 1891, Ballater, Aberdeenshire) on 25 September 1836 in St. Nicholas Church, Aberdeen. I believe they were inn keepers, owning the hostelry, Coilacriech Inn, in Ballater.

My great-grandfather was Francis Deans (b. 17 February 1841, Ballater, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, christened 11 March 1841 Glenmuick Parish Church, Ballater, d. 2 February 1915 Dunedin, NZ), who emigrated to Dunedin in 1862, sailing on the “Aboukir.” He was Manager of the Acclimatisation Society’s Hatchery at Opoho. In 1877 he married Emma Foord (b. 1856 Dunedin, d. 9 January 1895 Clinton, Otago) in Dunedin.

My grandfather was Alfred Leonard Deans (b. 18 May 1881, Dunedin, NZ, d. 9 March 1944, Palmerston North [or July 1946, Wellington?]), a locomotive engineer, married my grandmother Emma Thurza White (b. 20 January 1883, Hastings, d. 14 July 1955, Wellington) in 1907. They subsequently lived firstly in Foxton and then Paekakariki, Wellington, and had four children: Francis (Frank) Alex Stuart, who went into the navy, Ralph Wordsworth Hudson, a master tailor, Sefton who joined the army, serving in Crete and Dunkirk, and Thelma Dulcie (my mother).

If you would like to have more information concerning the family please feel free to contact me.

Katherine Seaman
