Maryville Times, (Blount Co. TN) Saturday, May 30, 1903:
"Never before in the history of Maryville has there been assembled a more brilliant company than that which gathered Wednesday night at “Cedar Circle” to witness the marriage of Miss Lillian Hannum and Mr. Joel Edward Deane of Rome, Georgia. It was a “Lillie Wedding,” everywhere in the decorations were clustered these beauties of nature, suggesting at every turn the name of the beautiful bride, fairer than which, certainly was never won by handsomer groom.
To the strains of the wedding march exquisitely rendered by Mrs. P.M. Bartlett, the bride with her bridesmaid, Miss Cecelia Lord, her maid of honor, Miss Ruth Rodges of Knoxville, the matron of honor, Mrs. Hugh French of Oakdale, Washington, and the lovely little ring bearer, Stacy Hannum, came slowly down the winding stairs and were met in the reception ball by the groom and his attendants, whence they took their place in the bay window of the parlor, where the Rev. J.N. Carnes of the M.E. Church, South, performed the beautiful ring service uniting for life this happy couple.
Among those present from out of town were Mrs. Calhoun of Nashville; Miss Lula Curry of Rome; Mrs. Hugh French of Washington; Messrs. Ab. and Frank Dean of Rome, brothers of the groom; Mr. & Mrs. John Ewing Hood of Knoxville; Rev. J.M. Carnes and wife of Clinton; Miss Willie Lord of Clinton; Rev. Will T. Bartlett; Mrs. J.T. Foute of Trigonia and Charles Porter of Rome.
The gifts which were displayed in a room upstairs, were many and beautiful; embracing solid silver, cut glass, elegant hand decorated china and checks for substantial amounts.
The decorations were white and green. The lilies with English ivy and asparagus making lovely bankings for mantels and draperies for doorways and staircase. The refreshments, furnished by Kern of Knoxville, were in perfect harmony with every other detail, and never was there a more beautiful setting for this perfect whole, than “Cedar Circle,” the ancestral home of the bride’s family.
After congratulations had been extended, the guests had registered in the bride’s book and good byes had been spoken, the bridal party was driven to the station where by special train it was conveyed to Knoxville, where the happy couple took train for Ashville, the objective point of the bridal journey. After June first they will be at home to friends in Rome, Georgia."
