Barbara:Thank you for the information on the Deane family. My gggg grandfather was Chester E. Hatch, Sr. He was born at Deerfield, Franklin CO, MA in 1794. He was a wagonmaker there in 1815. In 1817 he emmigrated to Port Hope, Northumberland CO, Upper Canada. This is the town that the Deane family first lived at Canada. He married that year to Mary Warren Deane. They then moved to Hamilton Twp., Northumberland CO.(From on-line transcript.) 1817 asessment Hamilton twp listed as Christopher Hatch,1818 Chester Hatch, SR, 1819 none, 1820 Christen Hatch 6 acres Lot 24 concession 2. 1821-1823 listed as Chester Hatch. 1824&1825 not listed.1826,1827,1829,1832 & 1833 listed as Chester Hatch. By 1834 the family was at Porter, Ransomville, NY. Mary died there in April of 1835 possibly April 1836. One of the children was named Noah Isaac Hatch. Isaac was the name of Chester's father. Thought that Noah may have been Mary's fathers name. We do see that sometimes Weston was listed as Warren though.
Have not found record of Mary's birth except LDS IGI possible 7 MAY 1801 Canada. Son Alonzo S. Hatch listed in US Census that his father born MASS mother born Canada. Story written by her daughter Rosina Graves Hatch in 1906, at Lapeer, MI stated thet her mother died at NY the "previous April" when referring to the family leaving for Lapeer in the fall of 1836.
An August 1834 letter from Chester's sister Esther (Hatch) Gunn, at Sunderland, MA. was addressed to Porter, Ransomville, NY and noted that she was glad that Chester was out of the tavern business and settled on a farm. She also noted that she hoped Mary was recovering from her illness.
In research at Lapeer there was a Chauncy Dean who moved there, after Chester did. He was related to Mary, and was from Hamilton Twp. Would have to review material to see which grandson of Joel he was. He had his mother and sister with him as I believe his father had died at Canada.
Wondered about this Deane line being Loyalists also. With the information that you noted, would now guess that they came over for low priced land as many Americans did after the Revolution. Loyalists were given land grants based on their service, with officers getting larger tracts. Christopher and Hawes Hatch of the Boston Hatch's were banished from Boston and recieved land grants. Both were officers. Hawes finally came back to spend his last years in Maine. After these land grants were given other Americans went to Ontario as the Canadian government needed the settlers.
Chester & family may have moved out of Canada due to what was called the Patriotic wars. There was quite a bit of fighting going on at that area of Canada from about the time they left and was so bad that Rosina noted that they had to travel through Buffalo, Cleveland, and Sandusky in order to avoid the Patriotic Wars when they went from NY to MI in 1836. The easiest way would have been to travel through Canada or by boat. Boats were still not that safe in the 1830's Great Lakes, so better they went by land.
