The following is from a Xeroxed copy sent to me of several book pages, source text unidentified. An Indian trader named Luke Dean bought lot number five in the south square [don’t know the town, but it is in Rowan Co, NC] from William Alexander and twelve lots in the east suare from Archibald Craig.72 Dean lived on the Yadkin River in 1758 and emigrated to ‘Georgia before 1766. 73 72. Rowan Deeds (incomplete copy of the entry) 73. Rowan Court Minutes, I, 55; Rowan Deeds, VI, 253. Dean’s departure may well have been a hurried and involuntary one. In July, 1767, he was presented by a grand jury in Georgia for “keeping a disorderly house, and entertaining horse-stealers, and other persons of ill-fame; and also for entertaining and harboring slaves.” Hooker, Carolina Backcountry. P. 235. Other notes in the same packet with the copies of the book pages: Book 6, page 254: On July 11, 1786, Luke Deane & wife “Hesther” of _______ [someone has written “Georgia” in the margin] through their attorney, John Dunn, let James Carson, a tanner, have lot #5 in south west square of Salisbury, for 20 pounds . . .” Note SDL: Georgia Virtual Vault has a copy of the original plat in Burke Co, GA, for 130 acres on Brier Creek, originally owned by Thomas Whitehead, and now near Isaac Perry and Michael Sharp (both have plots of prior owned land).
