Deal, Burns, Tennessee] Robert Corlew gives a summary of the history of this church in his History of Dickson County and notes, When the writer examined these records in 1948 they were in the custody of Henry J. Deal who lives near Burns, and who graciously permitted the author to examine them at leisure. Corlew also tells the story that The Negroes and Whites worshipped together in the same building in the Turnbull Church, with the two races sitting in different parts of the church, or with the Negroes in the balcony. This practice continued with apparent success until the 1850s when a slave by the name of Moriah Sellers bumped against the wife of Levi Tidwell in an accident which most of the whites thought could have been avoided. Friction resulted, the whites thinking the Negroes to be getting a bit too 'uppity,' and a separate building for the blacks was erected on a nearby lot. Corlews footnote here states that Henry J. Deal, lifelong member, stated recently to the author that his mother witnessed the accident which caused the friction." Notify Administrator about this message?
