This updates an earlier post and adds significant documentation documentation The Gravestone of James Deal at Noonday Baptist Church Cemetery, three miles west of the farm of James Deal , is inscribed;"James Deal ,Co H, 5GA REGT,CSA, wife Elizabeth". According to descendants still living 2003 who personally knew James, this stone was placed immediately following his death in 1925. Adjacent to this stone are graves of several additional members of the Deal Family. James Deal was enlisted as Private, Co.H, 5th Regiment Georgia Volunteer Infantry in Savannah GA in Nov 1863. He was discharged sick on 30 day furlough at Horse Creek, South Carolina on 20 March 1865. His service is documented in INDEX TO GA CIVIL WAR CONFEDERATE PENSION FILES, p 280 and on his Civil War Pension Application dated 23Apr 1921 and the Widow's Pension Application of his wife, dated 9 Aug 1926. He is buried at Noonday Primitive Baptist Cemetery near Canoochee, Emanuel Co GA. James Deal, b 25Feb1847 is sometimes confused with James Kalip Deal of Bulloch Co, the spouse of Elizabeth Deal (sister of James b 25Feb1847) and son of James and Martha Brack Deal THE JOHN DEAL CO. by Lucy Deal Garland and THE PROCTOR FAMILY of S E USA, Vol II by James R Proctor are good resources. Neither of them agree with the actual census data for James K Deal, nor his CSA service records. Below is the census data. 1850 Bulloch Census p 241, family 86 James Deal, age 39, wife Martha (Brack) age 40, son James, age 3 1860 " " p829, house 348, family 356 Martha Deal age 45, James age 10 1870 " " p 236R, family 431 James Deal age 25, wife Elizabeth 20, John 6/12 months 1900 " " house 573, family 581 James K Deal, born Sep 1846, age 53, wife Elizabeth b Jan 1843, age 57 1910 " " James K Deal, age 63, wife Bettie, age 66 Of these Censuses, the most accurate seems to be the 1900 "born Sep 1946, age 53" ROSTER OF CONFEDERATE SOLDIERS OF GA by Henderson, Vol 5, p 27 lists James Deal, Pvt, enlisted 4 Mar 1862,transferred on12 May 1862 to Co C,47thRegt GA Vol Inf.
