Thanks so much for the quick reply. Here are some details that I have collected….
My father always said that he was born in 1898.As his own book about David Popper states that he was born Nov. 17th 1897, I figure he should have that one right. We celebrated his birthday in Nov.His Hungarian name was Istvan.I believe he was confused on his SS application since the following was also confirmed through him.He lost both his father and his mentor,Popper, in the same year, 1913.He told me he was 16 and the following year found him in the war as a lieutenant in the Hungarian Army at age 17.I have a painting of him from 1917 (with cello). He looks to be around 20.
He died of complications from stomach cancer that resulted in cancer of the esophagus.Hermine De’ak was his mother, originally Hermine Szekely. His mother was not around when he died, but we all were and my mother might have just been confused with the paperwork.
I have to check back on this name, but I know his sister’s name was either Margot or Margit.I believe it was Margot.Maybe someone else in the family can assist.I will include the emails when I send the personal names (following info).
There is much more on this side of the family that is interesting….and can be obtained through my cousin who is Imre’s son and researched in Europe on the previous generations. There is a cousin in Budapest as well, daughter of my father’s first cousin…I will send you their names by separate email.I have an old address, butmy cousin probably has a more up to date address or email as he visited them a few years ago.
Mother always told me that her grandfather on her father’s side was a Baptist minister with absolutely no sense of humor, and that the two grandfathers would feud often re: differing religious approaches. Thanksgiving in Kansas back then must have been pretty exciting.
Your information on that side of the family is most informative and welcome as I have very little information.
Thank you again.
