George M. "Dummy" Leitner
George M. "Dummy" Leitner (6/19/1872-2/20/1960) was from Parkton, Maryland. He pitched one game apiece for the Philadelphia Athletics and New York Giants in 1901, and for the Cleveland Blues (Indians) and Chicago White Sox in 1902. He had a longer career in the minors, and worked and died in Baltimore. Interment was in Loudon Park Cemetery in Baltimore.
I know about his brief stint in the majors, how he and fellow deaf pitcher William "Dummy" Deegan were released by John McGraw shortly after he took over the Giants.
I now know that after that adventure, he worked as a printer in Baltimore and was a member of Baltimore Typographical Union No. 12. A friend sent me an obituary from the "Baltimore Sun," which indicates that he was predeceased by his son Clarence Wells Leitner, who worked on the news staff of the "Evening Sun," and survived by his wife, Helen (Wells), a daughter, Mr. Helen B. Wriede, five grandchildren, Wells Leitner, Barry Schwartz, James Wells Wriede, Mrs. George Evans, Jr., and Mrs. Jack Birnbaum, and seven great-grandchildren whose names aren't mentioned in the "Sun" obituary.
I'd like to get in contact with this family to obtain some good photos. At this point, I don't have anything. There's nearly illegible photo posted in "Baseball Reference," which looks as though it's taken from Marc Okkonen's Baseball Memories, initially from a microfilm of a newspaper clipping. (See http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/l/leitndu01.shtml.http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/l/leitndu01.shtml.) I'd like to try to obtain a better photo (a REAL one), and, if possible, more information.
