Frederico Mesa, a.k.a. Fred "Dummy" Mahan (1907-1930)
Frederico Mesa was a native of Tombstone, Arizona, of Mexican-American ancestry (although he used an Irish-sounding ringname). His birthdate appears to be unknown; his birth year was 1907. On February 12, 1930, he died in a parachuting fall near San Francisco. He had made several successful parachute jumps, believing that they were helping him regain his hearing. His fatal fall resulted when the shroudlines of his parachute became entangled; the chute wouldn't open. Mesa was a professional welterweight boxer, nicknamed "Dummy" (as were all professional deaf athletes in those days). I've found his statistics online in the "Boxing Encyclopedia," and have obtained a good photo from University of Notre Dame, but know virtually nothing else about him. I'd love to locate his DOB . . . and descendants of his family.
P.S. There are photos in the online "Silent Worker" Archives, and a photo posted online showing Mahan next to the pilot of an open-cockpit plane. I already know about these.
