Eve, In reply to your question regarding how common Deacon name is in Co. Kilkenny, there are some there, but the name is now more common in Co. Wexford, not very far from .
Co.Kilkenny. It is most common in the Enniscorthy and Bunclody area of Wexford, in the diocese of Ferns and seems to date from early 1700's.
I have a Thomas Deacon m. Jane Shirtcliff circa 1770.
Issue: Thomas b. 1771, Abraham b. 1773, George b. 1776, James b.1778, Joseph. This James b.1778 could not be your James, but it is possible Thomas m. Shirtcliff had a brother named James and called one of his sons James in turn.
Also have a brother of Thomas senior who married a sister of Jane. They are as follows:
Abraham Deacon[d. circa 1797] m. Margaret Shirtcliff c. 1773.
Issue: Mary b.1774, Margaret b. 1776[m.Edw.Warren], Elizabeth b.1778, John..no date, Michael b. 1784 d.1798, Jane b.1785, Thomas b.1789.
I do'nt know if this is of any help.
