James Cooper possible father of Henry Cooper ( c1765 MD or DE -c1835 TN)
James Cooperpossible father of Henry Cooper ( c1765 MD or DE -c1835 TN)
A biography of LP Cooper (Henry’s grandson) in The National Cyclopedia (1900) states Henry was “born in MD, served 6 months in the revolutionary army, although very young, and was honorably discharged.” 1880 census of Elizabeth Cooper Alexander reports her father was born in Delaware.
Land Records of Sussex County, Delaware, 1789-1792. Deed Book N, No. 13. Edited by Elaine. Hastings Mason & F. Edward Wright( p 23) "This Indenture made 26 Oct 1787 between Elijah COOPER of Washington Co , NC and Isaac COOPER of Sussex Co DE . 80 [LBs ] paid by Isaac for a tract of land called Hound’s Ditch which was conveyed to Elijah cooper by James COOPER & Jane his wife as will appear on records of Worcester cnty bounded near where Thomas HUGG did live , land where James JONES did live containing 120 acres of land , excepting the right of Jane COOPER during her natural life. Elijah COOPER appoints Phillips KOLOCK or Peter F WRIGHT of the town of Lewes , Sussex cnty , DE as his attorney , signed Elijah COOPER . Wit: Barkley TOWNSEND , James TULLEY . Rec 15 Aug 1789
This is a very interesting deed that suggests that James Cooper and his wife Jane conveyed 8O acres to Elijah Cooper [son of James ?] and that at a later date ( 26-oct 1787) Isaac Cooper purchases this land from Elijah who is now living in Washington County NC . Barkley Townsend ( father of Isaac’s wife Comfort ) is a witness.
This would indicate that James Cooper of Sussex DE is the father of Isaac and Elijah Cooper , but there is nothing yet to confirm a link between him to our Henry Cooper
