Peter Debes took the oath of alegiance on 8/7/1782 and Americanized his name to Davis. Peter was a Hessian Soldier from Nauen, Germany who came over to the American cause. This may be the same reason that your Davis took the oath. You may want to look up the Johannes Schwalm Historical Association on the net. They may be able to help identify your Abel Davis. Of course, he could have been an English soldier, instead.
