Ostrander died Fort Delaware

Looking for any clues regarding George Ostrander born circa 1854 in Salisbury, CT and who supposedly served in the Civil War having enlisted in Poughkeepsie, NY.

This information comes from an affidavit signed by his mother, Hannah See Ostrander, in 1883 that is included in her application for a dependent mother pension.

The affidavit states, "She is also the mother of George Ostrander who was enlisted in Po'keepsie N.Y. in about the year 1863 and died in hospital at Fort Delaware in the year 1864...and the said George was about 19 years old when he died."

Hannah could not remember George's Company or Regiment and said she was notified of his death via letter from one of his comrades.

Would sick or wounded Union soldiers have been cared for at Fort Delaware or was it solely a prisoner of war camp?

There are a number of George Ostranders, including one who enlisted in 1861 in nearby Litchfield, CT, but none that fits the scenario described by Hannah.

Has anyone run across George? Or can you help me eliminate any of the George Ostranders listed in the Civil War Research Database?

Thanks much,

Diane
