There is an obituary for Mrs. Ann Espey in the Daily National Intelligencer, Wash, DC, Apr 26, 1854. It reads: "Yesterday, the 25th instant, Mrs. Ann Espey in the 60th year of her age. The funeral will take place this afternoon at 4 o'clock from the residence of her son-in-law, John H. Thorn, on 5th street, between G and H, where the relatives and friends of the family are requested to attend without further notice." DC Marriage records show that John H. Thorn married Margaret Espey. So if Samuel had a sister named Margaret who married a John Thorn, odds are good that Ann was Samuel's mother.
