Moore Newton Mystery
Does anyone have information that could help solve this mystery?
I am attempting to find the missing daughters of William and Jane Farrar Newton who lived most of their lives in Mecklenburg County, VA. but spent their early years in Halifax County.
Their known children:
Henry James b. Nov. 1824
Julia b. May 1831
William b. abt. 1834
Joseph F. b. abt. 1838
Jane b. abt. 840
Mary b. abt. 1842
James b. abt. 1843
Lucy b. abt. 1847
I found, on the 1830 Federal Census of Halifax Co., VA that William and
Jane Farrar NEWTON had a son (age 5 & under 10) and two little girls
under age 5. The son is known through later censuses as Henry James
NEWTON. I call the two little girls Dau #1 & Dau #2 (i.e. Dau #1 b.
perhaps 1826-28 and Dau #2 b. 1827-30)
On the 1840 Census, William and Jane only had one daughter age
between 10 and 15, so one of the little girls had died. She probably
was not married as she would have been under 14 years old and
none of the other children married that early in that family. This was
the same family, in Halifax County, VA.
By the 1850 census, there is Henry J. and an 8 year gap between him
and his sister, Julia. So the 8 year gap which had always troubled me
about Henry J.'s parentage was explained because of the two girls born
between him and his sister Julia.
Because by the 1850 Census one of the daughters has died and one
(who is not on the 1850 census) must have married (she would have
been 24 or younger at that time), I feel that the elder of the two missing
girls lived and therefore is dau #1
I do not know her name, nor the name of the one who died. The other four
named daughters are: Julia, Jane, Mary, and Lucy and are still living at home
on the 1850 Census.
This means that the remaining unnamed daughter either died OR is married.
I believe she married someone named "MOORE."
Why?
On the 1880 Federal Census, I found the four named daughters (all spinsters)
Julia, Jane, Mary, and Lucy, living together (probably in the same house their
parents, William and Jane Farrar NEWTON lived in when they were alive).
Along with them are a nephew (William W. MOORE age 10) and a niece
(Ellen MOORE age 8).
On the 1900 Census of Pitt County, NC, Julia Newton age 69 is living with
William Moore and his wife Matilda Moore and their children.
Julia Newton is listed as "aunt."
=======================================
SO WHAT IS the name of the Newton daughter who married a Mr. MOORE?
After searching through all the "Moore" surnames in the area in 1850, a
possibility for this married daughter is:
Source Citation: Year: 1850; Census Place: Charlotte, Charlotte, Virginia;
RollM432_940; Page: 7A;
Household Members:
NameAge
Stephen S. Moore25
Nancy A Moore25
Elvira C Moore1
Was this Nancy's maiden name Newton?
Particulars on Nancy (could be Newton)
Name: Nancy A Moore
Age: 25
Birth year could have been 1825 or 26
Birth Place: Charlotte County (Dau #1 was probably b. in Halifax Co., VA)
Gender: Female
Home in 1850: Charlotte, Charlotte County, Virginia
Family Number: 108
======================
Reasons I like this family for Dau #1 NEWTON's married family:
1) Charlotte County is near Mecklenburg County
2) Surname= MOORE
3) The age range is correct for Dau #1 (b. 1825 or 1826)
4) The fact that they have only one child is evidence for them
having been married a short time.
5) William W. MOORE (when he grew up and married) named his
eldest son Henry (after uncle Henry?) SPENCER Moore.
Does the "S" in Stephen's middle name indicate "Spencer?"
Naming protocol often had the eldest son named after the paternal
grandfather.
6) Nancy is NOT the same as any of the other daughters of William
and Jane Farrar Newton.
=============================================
This is all just speculation.
Having 'found' William Moore as a grown up, I turned my search to
where Ellen Moore ended up.
On the 1900 and 1910 Censuses, I was looking for someone named
"Ellen" married and with a Newton in her household (one of the spinster
sisters of earlier censuses).
I found:
Name: Mary J Newton
Age in 1910: 73 (However Mary d/o William and Jane would only have
been about 68)
Estimated birth year:abt 1837
Birthplace: Virginia
Relation to Head of House: Mother-in-law (or perhaps 'like' a m-i-l)
Father's Birth Place: Virginia
Mother's Birth Place: Virginia
Home in 1910: Precinct 7, Washington, District of Columbia
Marital Status: Widowed
Race: White
Gender: Female
Household Members:
Name Age
Semmie A Payan 34 (looks to me like 'Samuel A.' and the last name is
very unclear but could be Puryear, a family closely
aligned with the NEWTON clan)
Lellie H Payan 30 Wife (Could be Ellie - Ellen?)
Mary J Newton 73 Mother in law
Mattie J Newton 32 Sister in law
Agnes A Smith 27 Boarder
Was the Lellie actually Ellen nicknamed Ellie?
And was this Mary J. Newton actually the unmarried Mary who was once
living with her sisters, Julia, Jane and Lucy?
And is she now considered "mother" to Ellen because as aunt she had been
the principal care-giver?
