Payne/Grayson Family of Washington, D.C.
Posted by: Blanche Simmons (ID *****9593) Date: May 16, 2009 at 06:37:28

I was told that my great grandfather was cutting down trees and a tree fell on him and he died from that incident. I don't know what year it was. I figure it was around or about 1891 because the youngest Blanche Grayson was born about 1891. After his death the wife and children moved to Washington, D.C. to live with a son.

My great grandmother's name: Mandy Grayson

My great grandfather's name: Redd Grayson. Redd may be misspelled, I don't know. I also have another name which I am not sure about. Wabe Grayson. I assume he died in Loudoun, Virginia from what I have been told.

I can find nothing on the family prior to 1900. It is as if they did not exist.

They are believed to be Cherokee. I have no proof of that. They are not listed on Dawes Rolls. They have been listed as Mulatto or Black on the Census.

On the 1900 Census you can find them under the name of Mandy Gracon - You see Mandy is living with a son named Samuel Payne. Evidently she was married to a Payne before she became a Grayson. I don't know. They are now living in Washington, D.C.

On the 1910 Census you can find them under the name of Mandy Grayson. They are still living in Washington, D.C.

I cannot find Mandy Grayson after 1910.

Anyway you can assist me would be appreciated.
