I've been working on this family for about the past two years. In short, William Rhodes, for whom the tavern was named, was the son of Abraham Rhodes of St. Mary's county.
William married at least twice - the first time to Ann Simms (widow of a Thomas Clark[e]whom I have been unable to trace) and the second time to Mildred Burch, daughter of Capt. Benjamin Burch, the doorkeeper of the U.S. House.
I have no evidence of any children from the second marriage but William and Ann had at least two children. Their son William I have not been able to trace but their other son, Hillary Hanson Rhodes married Marion Steuart Carter, daughter of Charles Landon Beale Carter and Ann Steuart.
William Rhodes not only ran the Rhodes Tavern for which he has become associated, but once he left that establishment, ran several hotels in the D.C. area.
I've not been able to locate a death date for William but he apparently died sometime between 1819 and 1821 - and some speculate he may have died in Kentucky where several of his siblings had located.
