I am researching John W. Bailey of Maryland. He married a woman named Elizabeth aka Betty, and I have found him in the 1870 census Washington Co. Ward 5 District of Columbia and the 1880 census D.C. He is with his two children, James E. b. 1859, and daughter Susan b. 1861/2. John W. is a brick maker. I believe I found him in the 1860 census with Elizabeth and son James but they are living in Bryantown, Charles County. I cannot find a marriage license for them nor a birth record for either James Edward (son)nor a birth record for daughter Susan. The census states that the children were born in Washington D.C. So I am wondering if the John Bailey in Charles County is my guy or not. I can't find a John & Elizabeth in Washington D.C during the 1860's, it was the era of the civil war. The 1870 census tells me that they are living side by side to a John and Mary Murphy, two children and a Louise Bailey - age 16. so somewhere I think these families are related. maybe Mary Murphy's maiden name is Bailey - just a guess. And Louise is helping out with the children. How can I find any marriage or birth records. I've tried the Maryland archives, ancestry.com and the family just blanks out on every line. It's a brick wall. any advice? does anyone have Murphy's and Bailey's in their family history? This whole family is buried in the Congressional Cemetery in Wash. D.C.but the death certificates don't have any clues in them. Any connections to anyone? any thoughts or help would be appreciated. Thank you.
