Robert,
If it helps, currently, mail addressed to an APO address with the 963 prefix is destined for Japan. In 1973, mail addressed to APO 96346 was destined either for Japan or Thailand, but most likely Thailand. It is hard to imagine a scenario where she would be receiving mail through an APO, but two come to mind. She may have been working in Thailand as a U.S. civilian employee. In the second case, she may have been living with, and the dependent of, a son or daughter who was in the military and stationed overseas.Do you know about her nationality? It was not unusual for military men to return from an overseas tour with a new wife.If she was a Thai and returned homeafter her husband died, she would NOT have received her mail through an APO.To use the APO, she had to live on, work on, or have some official affiliation with the military installation. As an aside, the payment she was receiving from the Social Security Administration may have been from her husband’s employment – not necessarily her employment.
Regarding the club, he may have wanted to join the nearby American Legion post or a Veterans of Foreign War (VFW) post. Both require that the individual produce a copy of his DD Form 214 (discharge papers) to become a member. From the Veterans' Administration Gravesite Locator, it looks like he was a Shipfitter first class. That sound like a non-commissioned officer position. If that is the case, he would not have been eligible to join the Army-Navy Club as that club is limited to commissioned officers.
