Maddie,
The F. O. Day Company was involved in paving and excavation. They paved many of the DC and Maryland streets and handled many of the construction projects that involved excavation, the laying of cement, etc.The company was started by Francis O. Day in the mid 1940s.It was headquartered in Montgomery County, MD.Previous to starting up the company, F.O. had been a Montgomery County (MD) deputy sheriff, was a Maryland State Roads Supervisor, and had spent many year in construction. The company remained operational until about 1990 when they filed for bankruptcy. There were three Francis O. Days – father, son, and grandson. The company was started by the eldest, F. O. Sr.He died in 1960, and I would suspect that his son (Francis O. Jr.) took over the business. But from news accounts, he appeared to have spent more time on the golf course that at the helm of the business.Francis Jr. married Alice Whalen, daughter of William Whalen, in the 1940s.
Francis O. Day, Sr. (the eldest) was the son of James W. and Rachel E. (Ricketts) Day and the grandson of Washington and Mary E. Day.The Day and Ricketts families were long residents of Montgomery County. The 1900 Census for Maryland, Montgomery County, Potomac, lists these family members, all born MD and all parents were born MD:
James W, born May 1858, married for 22 yrs, occup Farmer
Rachel, wife, born Aug 1862, married for 22 yrs, mother of 9 children, 8 are living
William, son, born March 1882, single, at school
Roger S., son, born Oct 1884, at school
James E(dgar), son, born Jan 1887, at school
Reuben D., son, born March 1889, at school
Emma A., dau, born Jun 1891, at school
Francis O., son, born Dec 1893
Calvin I., son, born Feb 1896
Dewey D., son, born June 1898
By the time of the 1910 census, Rachel is listed as the mother of 11 children with 9 children living. They names and ages were William 27, Roger 25, James 23, Reuben Daniel 21, Agnes 18 (likely Emma A.), Francis O. 17, Calvin I. 15, Bernard L. 9, and Mary S. 7.
By 1920, Francis O. is married and living on Falls Road. His wife (Margaret) is 25, born in MD.Francis lists his occupation as farmer.Living with them is a hired hand, Harry Ricketts, likely a relative.Four doors down, another Ricketts family lives – I suspect these are relatives as well.
If you believe this is your family and are interested in news articles from the Washington Post, let me know and I will relay those to you directly.
