March 20, 1974 edition:Hattie Browne Sheriff, wife of the late Dale Sheriff, died March 19, 1974. She resided at 1919 Luzerne Avenue, Silver Spring, MD, and was the mother of Mrs. Frank Appleby, grandmother of Mrs. Virginia Harter, and had five great grandsons.Funeral services were provided by the Warner E. Pumphrey Home on Georgia Avenue in Silver Spring.Services were held March 22 at 2pm.Interment in Arlington National Cemetery.
Dec 27, 1956, pg B2:Dale C. Sheriff, Veteran Printer and Union Chief.Died Monday at the Washington Sanitarium after suffering a stroke on Dec 15.He was 81.Mr. Sheriff was president of the Association of Veterans Union Printers Society at the time of death and a president of the Columbia Typographical Union.He retired as head proofreader at the Government Printing Office in 1940.Funeral services will held by S. H. Hines funeral home on 14th St, NW followed by burial in Arlington National Cemetery.He was born in Reynolds, Ill, and attended schools there.He joined the Navy in 1894 at the age of 20 and served in the Spanish American War.He came to Washington at the turn of the century and worked at the Navy Yard.In 1903, he married Hattie Browne, a native Washingtonian.He had lived at 1919 Luzerne Ave, Silver Spring, for the past 21 years.He also worked as a linotype operator for the old Washington Times before joining GPO.He was reelected year after year as president of the Veteran Printers.He was a member of the Spanish American War Veterans and the Hope Masonic Lodge.Besides his widow, he is survived by a daughter Cynthia Appleby of Takona Park; a granddaughter, Virginia Harter, and three great grandchildren.Funeral Services were provided by the S. H. Hines Co, 2901 14th St, NW.Service held on Dec 27, at 12 noon.Interment at Arlington National Cemetery.
There is also a photo of Dale which appears, by the shirt collar, to have been taken in the 1920's.
