Hi All, just wanted to share that Family Tree DNA is having a sale again!! I don't belong to their company in any way but I'm the granddaughter of a Dawson. My Henry Dawson lived in the middle of the Martin Dawson & John Dawson family groups in Amherst/Nelson County. I live next door to the Isle of Wight Dawson family group. Over the past 5 yrs or so more families have DNA tested and so far none of the families I have contacted as possible family have been related in any way. But I had my first breakthrough abt 4 yrs ago when a guy who didn't do genealogy decided it would be a fun thing to do and I had my first match! His family line were out of England to Maryland and many migrated west into PA and upper WV. I still haven't found his family or my connection to John & Rebecca DOYLE Dawson of MD but I did find that he lived in Augusta County, VA prior to Amherst because the DNA led me to go north rather than south or west like the other families from Amherst. DNA solved my Walker line too! My isolated little Walker family, (furthest ancestor was Solon Walker, b. 1800) who lived in (now) Clay County, WV had migrated from NH, being descended from Samuel Walker, b. abt 1614 from England who came to Boston, MA. This rarely happens but our match had done extensive family research and was able to plug us in within 24 hours to Samuel's tree. Oh, & my Walker family was in the middle of 2 other families of Walker's - while we searched for years for a paper connection, DNA showed that they were actually 3 lines of Walkers. For my Hanshaw line, DNA brought surprises - the oldest son was descended from the wife's first husband, and the middle & youngest sons DNA are revealing that the family name had been a different name within 5 generations. DNA testing requires PATIENCE while waiting for others to test but I sure love the way it has changed my research in 5 families so far! It quickly opens or closes doors when you can check with other families who HAVE tested. I love it when they have a sale so I'm encouraging all Dawson researchers to think about adding this to your research method. Start with 12 if that's all you can afford to get your foot in the door, but 37 markers and up are the ones that show the definite answers on what surname you relate to or what family you relate to w/in your surname group. I love DNA testing, can you tell? lol
