Elisha Dawley, b: 1793, NY, wed Mary (maiden name unknown), probably around 1814 either in NY or WI. I'm thinking for a Mary Houghton born in NY around 1794 and moved to Wisconsin later. I think she's a Houghton because of the tendency for people to use their family surnames as first and middle names for their children and Elisha and Mary's great-grandson is Allison Houghton Ruhe. Generally great-grandparents (the parents grandparents) would be as far back as the family would pull a name from, because they, the parents probably didn't know the great-great-grandparents. The Ruhe side is traced back quite a ways with no Houghtons, and the Allison side has no Houghtons that I can find. Mary is the only ancestor that we have that is close enough to Allison Houghton Ruhe for the parents to give him that name and that we don't know the last name of, so I'm thinking it might be Houghton. I searched Ancestry.com and the LDS site to no avail. Any help out there?
