I sent you an email a few days ago but have received no response. You and I had exchanged several emails last year about Mose, Frank and Hugh DAWKINS in AL. I lamented to you that I had only been able to find Mose (my GGGF) in Warrior Stand, Macon, AL, in 1880. However, by a sheer stroke of luck I finally found him in 1870 in the same location with same wife, Nancy, and their oldest child, Silvy. Here's what made my jaw drop, though: their surname was MARSHALL! After comparing the way they and their neighbors are listed in 1880 to 1870, I have concluded that mostly all of the African-American DAWKINSes found in 1880, carried the surname MARSHALL ten years earlier in 1870. As Skip Lassiter posted here in this thread, many of the former DAWKINS slaves were so fond of their former slaveowners that they chose DAWKINS as their surname. Apparently, so did Mose. Also, I noticed there were quite a few black and white neighbors in 1880 and 1870 with either the given name of Mosely or Moseley, and/or surname of MOSELY. So that is a new surname, along with MARSHALL, for me to research. Anyway, you may have found this info already, but here goes: Mary Elizabeth Rankin was born about 1862 in AL. Her parents appeared to have been Henry RANKIN born about 1829 FL, and Lucinda (nee unknown) born about 1829 GA.
