There were at least two George Dawkins in Newberry Co SC in late 1700's. George, SR. d. 1777. His will was burned during a Tory raid, according to Andrea, and a verbal desciption was accepted by the court and heirs after the war. He left all to Chloe, his wife. There were daughters who agreed to this. Andrea surmises that this was a ruse to protect the interest of son George, Jr. who had been banished as a former Tory officer to Canada. (There is apparently much evidence in SC files suggesting that such subterfuges were common.) In 1788, William Dawkins while administering the estate of Thomas Dawkins (apparently his cousin), sold 210 acres which had been given to Thomas by George Dawkins Senior and his wife Chloe Dawkins being his eldest son and heir at law. (Holcomb. Newberry County SC Deed Abstract, Books A-B. Columbia:1999.) It appears that an astate once distributed could then be redistributed. There may be a power-of-attorney from George, Jr. in Newberry or 96, or a record of sale or gift for George if in fact you seek Junior. Hope this helps to some degree. The Andrea file on Dawkins is a pretty good shotgun source also the SC Archives Central Automated Index. Both may now be online or available through your local CLDS FHC. If you come across parentage for William Dawkins, would appreciate. Thanks.
