Hi Skip,
Man, when I received your response to my genealogy website search, I felt as you did when you saw mine. :-) Like your wife and self, I have been researching the Dawkins family for the same number of years. And though I knew my grand father's parents and some of his siblings were slaves, I had not been able to make a connection. That is, not until now, because I truly believe the info you shared is key.
Years ago, while serving in the Navy, I had opportunity to come to Columbus several times (this was long before my research began). I had two shipmates, James (Skinny Bo) Simmons, and Joe Dixon who lived there. Skinny Bo lived on 4th Street, up from the VFW or Elks Post, I don't recall which. Joe Dixon lived up in the mountainous area.
Anyway, I'm told we had a cousin there named Eva Green DAWKINS that owned a local newspaper, years ago. One of my grandfathers brothers was an educator, and the family (once owned) land, there in Columbus, or thereabouts.
They also had family in Phenix City, Alabama, where one of my deceased aunts met and married her husband, Timothy Deloney aka Delaney.
Grandma attended the 4th Street Baptist Church, and grand dad the 6th Avenue AMEZion church, both in Columbus.

I have shared your response with a cousin named Roslyn, who unbeknownst to me until now, was/is making plans to come to Columbus in the very near future, primarily to try and find ties or answers to her father and grandfathers family.
