Reuben Dawkins was born Sept. 09, 1795 and died Nov. 28, 1866 in the Salem/Meadows Cross Roads area of Lee County, Alabama. In the 1850 census of Lee County it is enumerated that he was born in Georgia and in the 1860 Census of Lee County it is enumerated that he was born in South Carolina.

Notes: from the "Settlement Records of Russell County, Alabama - 1856-1859" pg;100 located in the Russell County Probate Office -
"Nov 16, 1856 - Personally appeared before me, John H. Lewis, Judge of Probate of the aforesaid county (Russell) Reubin Dawkins Guardian of the estate of Elijah S. (probably - Elijah Layfatte - son of Garland Dawkins of Muscogee County - a brother of Reuben's. Reuben served as administraator to Garlands estate when he died April 1838 as was reported in the Columbus Ledger) a minor. (compiler comment: this record was very difficult to read and could only abstract what is written here. This appears to be a release of Reuben as Guardian and cash and property disbursements to the court and Elijah) Three negros are mentioned in the final settlement - Moses - Tom and Billy in which it appears Elijah takes possession of the negroes.

Notes: Reuben Dawkins appears in the 1860 Census of Russell County, Alabama age 64 with wife Elizabeth Johnson Hines and 5 children. States his real estate property valued at $18,000 and Personal Property valued at $87,500. He enumerates his birth place as South Carolina. Census found on page 0990

Notes: On the 1860 Slave Schedules of Russell County, Alabama Reuben is enumerated to have a total of 37 slaves. This enumeration is found on page 20 of the schedule.

Reuben had a son Walter Scott Dawkins born Jan. 01,1833 who married Martha Bird Fitzpatrick. He died March 26, 1863 at Camp Watts (near Lochapolka) Ala., while in service to the Confederacy. In the 1860 Slave schedules he is enumerated to hold 7 Slaves.
