Hi Betty,
May Dawes was my grandmother as well. My Father Robert Dawes passed away 11/26/97. My nickname was Kitty and my sister's name is Susie. We moved from Ohio in 1953. Our grandfather's name was Thomas F. Dawes and according to my father was born in Joliette, IL 1878 and died in OH June 17, 1941. I have a copy of his obit. I too have the impression Dawes was not his given last name and may have been adopted.
Their children's names in order of age were Fred, Edwin, George, Edith, Robert, James & Harry. I never knew of Raymond or Howard who may have died in childhood.
Myrtle Gleason was our grandmother's sister and as best I can determine from research their parents were Alonzo Gleason and Rachel F. Dawes (could the F. be Frances?)
Myrtle was born 1/3/1890 in Fostoria, OH and dies in Erie, PA 1968. I never know of any other siblings.
I don't know of Mary A Dawes wife of JL Taylor...would they have been the parents of Thomas F. Dawes?
The dual appearance of the last name Dawes on both side of the family gets confusing.
Hope this helps and it's great to hear from a distant relative. Would love to hear from you.
Kathy
