Dawes Point under the south side of the Sydney Harbour Bridge is named after a Lt William Dawes who was with the first fleet with Capt. James Cook in 1788. His father apparently was a Benjamin Dawes decended from a Sir William Dawes (1671-1724) who was the Archbishop of York in the early 18th century. Lt William Dawes became a well know astromer. No info on the Dawes Range as yet.
