Allan; It sounds as though you've been tracking this for a while. Bravo! I have so enjoyed the searching. Regarding Bates, I found a 5th cousin last year (Nicholas) who had done extensive research of William and Ruth's line. He has us documented back to the mid 1600's. It's the Campbells I'm having trouble with. I had also considered that if the two Sarah's are sisters then William Campbell's wife could have been a Lusted, possibly even Maria or Sarah Lusted but nothing solid. The other two dilemma's are How, when, and why they traveled to the US. (probably between 1829 and 1831) and what they did in Montgomery County for 10 years. My Bates, according to Childs 1890, spent 10 years in Montgomery County. This would include the birth of at least three children yet I can't find any record of them ever being there. I also don't know what happended to Samuel and Sarah Maria's eldest son William F. He was in Cape Vincent when his wife Sarah Jane died in childbirth in 1851. Then it appears that his daughter may have lived with his parents (this from 1860 census)until she died in Feb 1868 at 16 yrs 3 months of age. These are my foremost remaining mysteries. I trust that you would like to be updated regarding what I find about the Dawes/Bates ? homestead that I mentioned. If you'd like to email, write fambates@gcnet.com.
