I am trying to research my great-grandmother, Corinthia Davis. According to most information I have found, she was from Grayson Co. VA. I have been told that according to the marriage document for her and my great-grandfather, George Riley Christian, they were married in Tazewell Co VA on Sep 28, 1889, and that it gave her parents names as Thomas and Angeline Davis. It supposedly also gives her middle initial as "S." I have not seen that document for myself, so I cannot verify it at this time.
Now, on to the documents I have seen for myself (and I have the images of the original documents):
The 1870 Grayson Co VA (Wilson) census:
shows William Davis - age 28 - born VA
Leazy - age 21 - born VA
Corintha T - age 3 - born VA (the annotated on the New River site transcribes as Conutha) http://www.newrivernotes.com/va/1870wcdi.htm
Effa C - age 1 - born VA
The 1880 Grayson Co VA (Wilson) census: (very faded and hard to read)
shows Ambrose Duncan - age 26 - born VA
Luenza(?) - age 32 - born VA - wife

Effie - age 11(?) - born VA - stepdaughter
M(innie?) E. - age 4 - born VA - daughter
V(____) - age 1 - born VA - son
The 1900 McDowell Co WV census
shows George R. Christian - born Sep 1862 - VA - age 37 - (married 10 years)
Corintha - born May (or Mar) 1867 - KY - age 33 - (married 10 years)
Mattie - born Feb 1886 - VA - age 14 (listed as daughter even though age precedes parents marriage)
Effie P. - born June 1889 - VA - age 10 (listed as daughter)
Bessie E. - born Apr 1892 - VA - age 8
Willie C. - born Mar 189_ - VA - age 6
Nani B. - born Aug 1897 - WV- age 2
Sally L. - born May 1899 - WV - age 1
The 1910 McDowell Co WV census
shows George R. Christain (spelled wrong) - age 48 - marriage 1 - born VA
Corinthia - age 42 - born VA marriage 1 - born VA
Bessie - 17
Willie C. - 15
Nannie B. - 13
Sallie L. - 11
Carrie B. (my grandmother) - 9
Dewey - 7
Walter - 4
Sometime between 1910 and 1918, Corinthia died. I have not been able to find a death record. I have images of death records for her children Willie, Nannie, Sallie, Carrie, and Walter. Willie's says his mother, Corintha Davis, was born in "Gacin" Co. VA. Nannie's says Corinthia Davis - VA. Sallie's says Mrs. Corinthia Christian - Tazewell Co, VA. Carrie's says Corintha Davis - VA. Walter's says Corntha Davis - Grayson Co, VA.
Another thing, although I cannot verify it, my aunt remembers it being said that Corinthia's mother may have been a McGrady. There are plenty of McGradys in Grayson Co censuses. I have seen a couple family trees on another site that show the "Conutha" and Effa being daughters of William Washington Davis, but there is a William W. Davis who also appears in the 1870 Grayson census, and I believe these are possibly being confused. As for the marriage record I haven't seen: maybe Thomas was William's middle name? Maybe Leazy or Luenza were short for Angeline?
I do believe that my Corinthia is the same one who appears in the Grayson Co VA 1870 and 1880 censuses. The ages fit, and the fact that the 1880 Grayson VA and the 1900 McDowell WV give her birthplace as Kentucky. And she had a daughter named Effie... maybe named after her sister? Anyone out there know anything?
