According to the Kissimmee Valley Gazette, Kissimmee, FL, in an article titled Murder of Davis Last Spring,dated Friday, September 30, 1898, quoting the Fort Myers Press, it recorded, "On or about the middle of March last, John Davis, the celebrated Everglade guide, during an altercation with Arthur Spear, a hunter and trapper, was cut across the back of the left hand, on the ledt arm just below the shoulder, then stabbed in the back ... he was taken to Baiinger in a skiff boat ... to a doctor ... the doctor told them the stab wound had ruptured an artery un the shoulder blade, out of his reach, and it was impossible for him to do anything ... he was carried back home where he lingered and died and subsequently buried on the east side of Taylor's Creek. Witnesses to the at his death and burial were Mrs. Davis, Mr. & Mrs. W. A. Ferrell, C. G. McLeod, A. A. McRae, E. W. Sapp and Captain John J. Webb."
John Robert and Amanda Hunter-Davis has another son, Robert E. Lee Davis who was given to and adopted by Benjamin Britt and his wife. Robert Lee Davis died in 1977.
