Patrick,
You have hit the right family!
William Davies was my great-great-uncle, the brother of my great grandfather, David, son of Moses, and grandson of ......... John Davies! (died 1806). I have the "Family Notes" written by David, which enabled my late aunt, Phyllis, to construct a detailed family tree of the Merthyr Davieses, augmented with other details, that lack many modern branches.
Like your Gt-Gt-Grandfather, William moved to London in 1842 and worked as a sculptor, as did David, later in 1858. He had six children, including Mary Elizabeth (1855-1930) who married a W.Cadwaladr Davies. Although I have never seen her grave, I record that she is buried in Glannada Cemetrery, Bangor. That's all I know about her.

Her brother, Gwilym Lloyd, emigrated to Argentina, where a huge clan of Davieses persists. I am in irregular communication with my ever-so-many times removed American cousin, Gerald Bush (no relation to the Pres!) who is descended from that part of the family, and now lives in California.

The "Family Notes", and David's "Autobiographic Notes", both provide an insight into Victorian life in the South Wales valleys. I have transcribed them and sent copies to the Public Library in Merthyr, and will gladly send you a copy if you wish. Meanwhile, you will be most inetersted in this extract from the latter,
"Turning to my brother's family [William's], during this time, the matter of chief interest lay in the gradual development of Mary's musical abilities. I have a programme preserved by my mother of a concert given at Myddelton [?] Hall, Upper St. Islington, at which Brindley Richards played a duet with Miss M[ary].E[lizabeth].Davies, "La Fete de la Reine" My brother was conductor, Mary and Dilys sang a duet "The Song and March of the Levites"
Mrs.Edwards and Mrs.Watts were the chief vocalists, and the Rev.John Mills gave an address, March 14th about 1891."

Family History is a fascinating hobby and one which I hope to pursue more when I retire, so your contacts and knowledge will be invaluable.

Please contact me at my email address john.r.davies@btinternet.com as we no doubt have much to talk about!

Cousin John Davies
