Several sources have identified John Davidson, born about 1812, of Montgomery County, Tenn., who married Sarah ______ (not Comer), born Louisiana about 1814, as the son of Benjamin Davidson and Polly Lyle of Montgomery County. However, Benjamin and Polly had (another) son John S. Davidson, born 1824-25, who married Sarah W. Comer and moved to Johnson County, Illinois. I would like to offer the speculation that that the John Davidson of Montgomery County was actually a son of John Davidson and Violet Tidwell of Dickson County. Here is what I know of John's family and descendants. If anyone can offer evidence to refute or support this speculation, please write me at abunner@surfbest.net - 2371. John Davidson, born Dickson County, Tennessee, 1785, married in 1803 Violet _________ (Tidwell?), born South Carolina 1783. John died in Dickson County 10 December 1839 (1560, 1870). Violet was head of household in Dickson County in 1840 (175). Violet, age 66, with her children Joseph and Matilda, were living in 1850 in Middle District, Dickson County, next to her son James Davidson (176). Violet was with her son Joseph in Humphreys County in 1860 (177). Children: 2379. Henry, b. about 1804 2380. Joseph, b. Tenn. about 1806 2381. Sarah, b. about 1808 2382. David, b. about 1810 2383. John, b. about 1812 2384. Mary, b. about 1813 2385. Elijah, b. about 1814 2386. William (“Bill”), b. Tenn. about 1818 or in Jan. 1825 2387. James, b. Tenn. about 12 Mar. 1820 2388. Peggy, b. about 1820 2389. Matilda, b. Tenn. about 1822 2383. John Davidson, born about 1812, apparently married before 1840 and was living in 1840 in Dickson County, close to his widowed mother (175). Children: (dau.), b. Tenn. 1835-40 (son), b. Tenn. 1835-40 (dau.), b. Tenn. 1835-40 Our speculation is that this John Davidson is: John Davidson, born about 1812, apparently married before 1840 and was living in 1840 in Dickson County, close to his widowed mother (175). This may be the John Davidson, born Tennessee 1812, who married Sarah ________ ("Salley"), born Louisiana or Mississippi about 1812-14. They lived in Montgomery County, Tennessee. John died between 1850 and 1860. Sarah was a widow, with 4 children, in Montgomery County in 1860. She was a widow in District 12, post office Clarksville, Montgomery County, in 1870, with 3 children at home (178). Salley Davidson was a widow in 1880, living in District 12, Montgomery, with her married daughter Elizabeth Davidson (179). Sarah's obituary reads, "On 26 May 1893, Mrs. Sarah Davidson died at the home of her daughter Mrs. Lizzie Davidson, at age 79+. Sarah was born Dickson Co., Tennessee December of 1813, but lived Clarksville for the last 50 years. She was a Methodist and the mother of 14 children, 4 of which survive: B. F., Lottie, Mrs. Lizzie Davidson and Mrs. Crotzer. Burial was to be in Riverside Cemetery" (1904). The "14 children" seems very unlikely. Children: 2461. Violet or Violette, b. Montgomery Co., Tenn. 1836 2462. Benjamin Franklin, b. Tenn. 1839 2463. Artemise (dau.), b. Montgomery Co., Tenn. 1840 2464. Sarah E., b. Montgomery Co., Tenn. 1841 2465. Zachary Taylor, b. Montgomery Co., Tenn. 1849 2461. Violet or Violette Davidson ("Vilotta" or "Lottie"), born Montgomery County, Tennessee, 1836, was at home, unmarried in 1870 (178). Lottie was unmarried in 1880, living in District 12, Montgomery County, with her married sister Elizabeth (Davidson) Davidson. Lottie was then a seamstress (179). This MIGHT be the Lottie Davidson who married in Dickson County, Tennessee, 13 May 1894, Charles Carver (). Violette Davidson, born Tennessee in June 1836, was single in 1900 on Currant Street in Clarksville, District 12, Montgomery County, next to John and Mary A. Davidson (below), working as a seamstress (1158). 2462. Benjamin Franklin Davidson, born Tennessee in 1839, married in Montgomery County, Tennessee, 29 October 1858, Mary J. Lemons, who was born in Pennsylvania (or Mississippi) in 1842, of Pennsylvania-born parents (3173). Mary was living with 2 children in District 1, Montgomery County, in 1870, close to the Kentucky border. Living with them in 1870 was Elizabeth Lemon, possibly Mary's sister (178). Once source reports that Benjamin died between 1860 and 1870 (3354). However, he was still living in 1893, according to his mother's obituary. B. F. and Mary Davidson lived in District 12, Montgomery County, in 1880, when B. F. was a painter (179). Probably he is the B. F. Davidson at 703 Elder Street, Clarksville, in 1895, having wife Mary, with Frank, Charles, and Albert Davidson at same address (1904). Children: 2466. John W., b. Montgomery Co., Tenn. 1859 2467. Benjamin Franklin ("Frank"), b. Tenn. 1866-67 2468. Walter R., b. Tenn. 1868-69 2469. Albert, b. Tenn. 1870-71 2470. Eugene, b. Tenn. 1871-72 2471. Charley, b. Tenn. 1877-78 2466. John W. Davidson, born Montgomery County, Tennessee, in 1859, is probably the John W. Davidson, born Tennessee in September 1859, who married in 1881-82 Mary A. ________, born Tennessee in November 1858. They lived in 1900 in Clarksville, Montgomery County, next to Violette Davidson, where John was a painter (1158). They lived in 1910 in Ward 18, Memphis, Shelby County, Tennessee, where John was a hardwood finisher (2397). Children: 2472. Earl W., b. Tenn. Jan. 1884 2473. Ernest J., b. Tenn. Nov. 1885 2474. Ruby M., b. Tenn. May 1889 2475. William W., b. Tenn. Mar. 1892 2476. Kate O., b. Tenn. Sept. 1893 2472. Earl W. Davidson, born Tennessee in January 1884, was unmarried and living at home in Ward 18, Memphis, Shelby County, Tennessee, in 1910, working as a photographer (2397). 2473. Ernest J. Davidson, born Tennessee in November 1885, was unmarried and living at home in Ward 18, Memphis, Shelby County, Tennessee, in 1910, working as a moulder (2397). 2474. Ruby M. Davidson, born Tennessee in May 1889, was unmarried and living at home in Ward 18, Memphis, Shelby County, Tennessee, in 1910, working as a bookkeeper (2397). 2467. Benjamin Franklin Davidson ("Frank"), born Tennessee 1866-67, was listed in Clarksville, Montgomery County, in 1900, as Frank Davidson, born Pennsylvania in March 1868, son of a Pennsylvania-born mother. He was unmarried in June 1900, working as a cigar maker (2397). 2468. Walter R. Davidson, born Tennessee 1868-69, married first, possibly about 1902, _____ _____. He married second, in 1906-07, Florence E. ________, born Tennessee 1868-69. They lived in 1910 with no children in District 22, Montgomery County, where Walter was a wagoner for mines (2397). Walter and Florence were farming in District 13, Montgomery County, in 1930, with no children. Walter'a age was then listed (in error) as 56 [born 1873-74] and Florence was listed as age 60 [born 1869-70] (2475). 2471. Charley Davidson, born Tennessee 1877-78, must be the Charles Davidson, born 1878-79, son of a Pennsylvania-born mother, who married in 1899-00 Mary ________, born Tennessee 1879-80, daughter of an Irish father, and lived in 1920-30 in Wards 8 and 7, Clarksville, Montgomery County, where he was a house painter (2398, 2475). Children: 2480. Marie, b. Tenn. 1902 2481. Eileen (dau.), b. Tenn. 1910-11 2480. Marie Davidson, born Tennessee in 1902, married in 1927-28 C. D. Mills, born Tennessee 1904-05. They lived in 1930 with Marie's parents in Clarksville, where C. D. was a dry goods salesman and Marie was a stenographer at a tobacco business (2475). 2481. Eileen Davidson, born Tennessee 1910-11, was a stenographer at a dry goods business in Clarksville, Tennessee, in 1930 (2475). 2463. Artemise Davidson, born Montgomery County, Tennessee, 1840, was at home, unmarried in 1870 (178). She married in Clarksville, Montgomery County, Tennessee, 31 December 1874, Leander Washington Crotzer, born 1830-31 (3173). Leander had married first, in Montgomery County, 13 November 1856, Martha C. Brown, who died in childbirth 7 December 1859 (1506, 3173). They lived in 1880 in District 12, Montgomery County, when Leander worked at a plow factory (179). Leander W. Crotzer died 23 November 1889 in South Clarksville, Tennessee, of pneumonia. His newspaper death notice notes that he was a Confederate soldier, a Mason, and a Methodist. He left a wife and two children. His obituary mentions a sister, Mrs. Eli Rudolph. Leander is buried at Greenwood Cemetery (1506). Children of Leander Washington and Martha (Brown) Crotzer: 2483. (infant), died in childbirth 7 Dec. 1859 Children of Leander Washington and Artemise (Davidson) Crotzer: 2484. John A., b. Montgomery Co. about 1879 2485. (child) 2484. John A. Crotzer, born Montgomery County, Tennessee, about 1879, was a boarder in Nashville, Davidson County, Tennessee, in 1900, where he was a polisher at a shoe factory (1158). 2464. Sarah E. Davidson (probably Sarah Elizabeth), born Montgomery County, Tennessee, 1841, must be the Miss Elizabeth Davidson who married in Montgomery County, Tennessee, 24 March 1867, John Wesley Davidson, #3724, her second cousin (?), born Montgomery County about 1842, son of Absalom and Martha Ann (Whitworth) Davidson. 2465. Zachary Taylor Davidson ("Zach" or "Jack"), born Montgomery County, Tennessee, 1849, was at home with his mother in District 12, post office Clarksville, Montgomery County, in 1870, when he was a painter (178). Can anyone add any further info on descendants of this family, or to the speculation connecting John Davidson of Montgomery County to John and Violet Davidson of Dickson County?
