Mr. Moore,
I saw your post and would like to give you some information on the Davidson/Simpson connection. I have been looking for my William Simpson's ancestors for a very long time. A number of years ago I ordered several estate papers out of Union County, SC.

One is the estate of William T. Simpson, Esq., died by 1814. No will in these papers.
Legatees: Mary Davidson, late wife of Thomas Davidson
her issue: Margaret S. Harris wife of Pleasant Harris
and Mary Patton, wife of George Patton. Isabella Means wife of James Means, Sr. and Nancy Mayes wife of Joseph Mayes. James Means and Joseph Mays, Admtr.
From the account records: To Cash paid Christopher Golightly guardian for Miss Davidson. So, I would assume Mary Davidson had an unmarried daughter and that Thomas Davidson is also dead. No sons or wife listed in this estate. There is mention of tax paid on land in Georgia.

My calculation on Mary's age would be at least 40 with two married daughters. So, that would be no later than about 1774 for her year of birth.

Since this estate record had no mention of sons, it has not been much help to me. I have learned over the years, though, that it is sometimes important to follow relatives, neighbors, etc.

My William Simpson (b.1812) Union County, SC (according to at least one son's death certificate) married in Spartanburg County to Elizabeth Snoddy, daughter of John Snoddy and Mary Daniel. They went to Pendleton, SC (1852--after my great grandfather's birth of 1845 and his brother and sister in Spartanburg County), grandfather and father were born there. I have followed several Simpson lines and can't seem to connect him to any SC lines so far.

Last year my sister and I found a small book with some family history notes in our mother's things. It was probably completed in the 1930's. It states that the earliest known Simpson ancestor came to Virginia. I have just found William Simpson in Dalton, Whitfield County, GA in 1900 census with his youngest son and his family. He died 1901 and is buried Old Stone Church Cemetery, Clemson, SC. This 1900 census which in not indexed on Heritage Quest or Ancestry states his father born Virginia and mother Ireland. 1880 census says South Carolina for both.

I hope this will information may be of some help to you. Let me know if you need any additional information or if you have anything that you think may help me.

Cynthia Simpson Hattersley
