I need to clarify, regarding the above posting, that it was not my purpose to make a case for Thomas Davidson of Laurens and Newberry Counties, SC, being a son of John and Jane Davidson of North Carolina. It was merely my intention to post what is documented and proven relative to Thomas of Laurens and Newberry, with comments on two other Thomas Davidsons in South Carolina during that time; Thomas of Colleton County, and Thomas who bought and sold slaves in Charleston in 1767 and 1770. There was another Thomas Davidson who died in Charleston in 1763/4 and it is very likely that he was the son of John and Jane Davidson of North Carolina, for reasons which another member of this forum will probably post when he is ready to do so. Thomas of Laurens and Newberry may indeed be the Thomas of slave records in Charleston in 1767 and 1770 (these records could not refer to the Thomas who died in 1763/4), but this was not meant to show that he was the son of John and Jane Davidson of North Carolina, nor was it meant to suggest that he actually lived in Charleston. Charleston was the major slave market for the entire South Carolina region, including parts of North Carolina and Georgia, and a person's name in Charleston slave transactions by no means implies that he lived in Charleston.

There are reasons to believe that Thomas Davidson of Laurens and Newberry was a younger man than Thomas who was the son of John and Jane Davidson of North Carolina (he said to be born about 1733). Certainly the children of Thomas of Laurens and Newberry were younger than the daughter of Thomas who died 1763/4, as Thomas of Newberry left two minor children in 1799, and his older children were likely born in the 1770s, which could place his own birth as late as ca. 1750.

I have no information whatever to link Thomas of Laurens and Newberry with any North Carolina Davidsons. That he had a son named John and a daughter named Jane constitutes proof of nothing whatever on its own merit; he had children of other names who could just as well have included the names of his own parents, and he may not have named any child after either of his parents.

I apologize if my posting appears to suggest that I was attempting to prove a connection to the North Carolina Davidsons, for such was certainly not the case. While I did leave that possibility open, until such time as proof is found to show that another Thomas was in fact their son, or proof is found to show that Thomas of Laurens and Newberry could not have been their son, my comments concerning Thomas of Laurens and Newberry were intended to make it clear that he could just as easily have been the son of other Davidson families.

Since posting on Thomas of Laurens and Newberry, I have been informed that the research of Robert Stephens Hand and others has succeeded in accounting for all the Thomas Davidsons of the Mecklenburg family and their connections, and thus that there are no "extra" Thomas Davidsons floating about who belong to that family connection. On the basis of this information, I would naturally conclude that Thomas Davidson of Laurens and Newberry Counties, SC, could not possibly be a member of this North Carolina family.

There were various Davidson families in the Piedmont regions of both North and South Carolina and they were not all related. My posting was made in the hope that someone might benefit from the information contained in it, and that it might perhaps suggest a connection with any of the various Davidson families in the Carolinas in the late 18th Century.

Finally, I submit that Thomas of Laurens and Newberry probably married the daughter of the William Freeman who was of Laurens County. The US Census of 1790 lists in Laurens County three Freeman heads of households: William Freeman, Robert Freeman, and Samuel Freeman. If this is the case, the lost will of William Freeman would likely have been a Laurens County will.

There is nothing to suggest the name of Thomas Davidson's first wife, who was the mother of his four older children.

I hope this clarifies my intent in the first posting and hope I have not led others astray by careless wording or caused misconceptions as to the purpose behind that posting.
