It is my understanding that the man at the top of the crest with a rope around his neck signifies that a Davenport was a bailiff or magistrate in Chester who was in charge of the hangings. I don't know what the rest of the symbolism means.
I think that it is most interesting about the name coming from the Dane River which flows not far from Chester.
I also thought that the de Davenports were of Norman ancestry who went to England with the Norman invasion.
