Seeking information on the origins and family of Joshua DAUGHTRY (as it is spelled in NC) or DAUGHTREY (VA) who d. 1784 in Northampton Co. NC. The known or accepted facts about his life sometimes contradict one another and may refer to separate individuals.

* Joshua DAUGHTREY was b. abt. 1691 in Isle of Wight Co. VA, son of James and Elizabeth DAUGHTREY. (Some sources put his birth as late as 1730.)

* In the 1720s, a number of DAUGHTREY cousins and their neighbors, many of them Quakers, moved south into what is today Northampton Co. NC. Joshua appears to have been among them.

* On 8 Feb 1731, Joshua DAUGHTRY purchased land in what was then Bertie Co. NC. (This places his b. not later than 1710.)

* On 14 Sep 1734, Joshaway DAUGHTREY [sic] was named executor in the will of Robert BRASWELL Sr. in what was then Bertie Co. NC. He is believed to be BRASWELL's son-in-law, the huband of daughter "Sarah DAUGHTRY." (This places his b. bef. 1709.)

* On 20 Oct 1747, Bryan DAUGHTRY purchased the BRASWELL homeplace from sons Julian and Robert BRASWELL Jr. Joshua DAUGHTRY witnessed the sale and is presumed to be relative of Bryan.

* Sometime aft. 1748, Joshua and six other DAUGHTRY men appear on the roster of a Northampton militia company commanded by Capt. Samuel Cotton. (This would place his aft. 1688, and likely aft. 1703, but bef. 1732.)

* On 25 Sep 1751, Joshua DAUGHTRY sold an acre of land near Woodland to "Trustees for the body of people called Quakers." This became the home of the Rich Square Monthly Meeting. The deed was witnessed by Bryan DAUGHTRY, a known menber of that Meeting and a presumed relative of Joshua.

* On 15 Nov 1757, Thomas DAUGHTRY makes his will in Northampton Co. NC, naming as executor is "cousin" (nephew/?) Bryan DAUGHTRY (Jr./?). Joshua DAUGHTRY was a witness.

* On 26 Jul 1758, the will of Elizabeth DAUGHTREY back in IOW Co. VA refers to "son Joshua," along with her other children William, Richard, Sarah, John, Moses, and Benjamin. However, Joshua was not named in the 1740 will of his uncle Joseph or the 1751 will of his grandfather William.

* In Jun 1784, Joshua DAUGHTRY makes his own will, naming wife Elizabeth; children Lucretia (wife of William CAMPBELL (wife of William CAMPBELL), a second dau. (wife of Stephen HOWELL), Mary (wife of John FUTRELL), Elijah, and Elisha; and grand-daughters Elizabeth and Anne GATLING (children of dau. Mary by her first m.)

Several researchers have suggested that the Joshua of 1784 is the same Joshua who appears in the earlier records. Available evidence suggests that the children named in 1784 were b. 1750-1765, and no mention is made of older children or grandchildren by an earlier wife (Sarah BRASWELL), if any.

I suspect that the Joshua of 1784 is a different individual, poss. even the son of the Joshua of 1731-1758. Can anyone provide evidence or leads that might shed light on this hypothesis?
