Jean, My family name is Dawber and my ancestors originate from the Wigan area. My information is that the name came from Prussion part of Germany and was spelt Tauberfelt, connected to the military.Through the years it was shortened to Tauber and changed to the variants Dober,Dauber,Dawber and Dowber. In my family tree I have three variants of the name all taken from church registers going back to early 1600's. My ancestors too were Catholic but changed through the years.Any information I have on file I will gladly share with anyone who is interested.
