Aloha, Lisa!
It appears that Joseph was Azorean and not
from the Madeiran Archipelago. You need to
see if his death certificate (US, I presume)
indicates what island in the Azores he immi-
grated from.If his "mulher" was from Lajes,
Pico, good chance he came from the same area.
The LDS (Mormon)Family History Centers in
your area will be able to provide film num-bers which will enable you to order on a per-
manent basis if you desire - that you might
go through these films you order at your lei-
sure!Don't be afraid to "read" the records
in Portuguese (it very much resembles French
and Spanish).Try Pico records first (DOBs)
and so on, it will be time consuming but be
more of a process of elimination.Oh, yes,
Azorean records were copied using the smallest lens openings possible - so, avail
yourself of a magnifying glass!Search for
Santo DOBs.Did the gentleman apply for US
citizenship?That would be another "tack"
you might handle - time permitting. Were
there any Portuguese benevolent societies
where he resided? He may have been a member and contributed annual dues?Concentrate on
the man's records as researching Portuguese
women is most difficult as their names of record most often had no semblance to the
families they belonged!Ildefonse is not a
common Portuguese moniker and be of Flemish
origin?Sounds interesting!Good luck!
