My family, da Silva, has lived in Madeira for about 450 years. Anyway, I went to the Madeira Archives and looked in the passport records where there was a companion with the name of Matilde and the main person had the name of da Silva.

I do not know if this is your relative or not, but I found a Joao da Silva with a sister named Matilde going to Brazil in 1888. They were from Porta do Sol, Madeira. Their parents were Agostinho Gomes da Silva and VicÍncia de Jesus. They had another brother name Jose,

Matilde married a Manuel Rodrigues da Cova

The Madeira Archives can be found on-line at

Good Luck,

Tom Freitas
