My files were not lost after all, just misplaced. Apparently when I downloaded the file from Ancestry.com it produced an entire genealogy database from another family under the same filename as mine. After deleting the downloaded file, the Family Treemaker program continued looking for the data in the downloads folder. It was located elsewhere on the "C" drive.

It's a pain to backup these files on floppy disks - they're huge. But it's probably not a bad idea.
