Just another descendant of Thomas Darrah of PA, weighing in.
The name is very probably Celtic or Keltic. However, I have seen sources that list it as an even older Pictish family name.
At one time, all immigrants from Ireland were called Irish. It wasn't until relatively recently, that the distinction, usually based on religion, between Irish and Scots-Irish was made.
The distinction may even be a moot point, as the name seems to be more associated with several islands in the Irish Sea, so our ancestors were between the two groups, the Scots and the Irish.
